All Natural

By Emily

I am often embarrassed to leave the house without any makeup. It takes me 10 minutes to apply eye shadow, blush, powder and lip gloss, another 20 minutes to straighten my hair and if I am feeling good, only about 5 minutes to pick out an outfit.

In an experiment conducted by Glamour, 97 per cent of young women admitted to having at least one “I hate my body” moment. The survey attributed some of this negative energy to unattainable and idealized media images, and feelings of self-worthlessness.

The Dove Real Beauty campaign was only one example of initiatives companies have done to promote ordinary body sizes. Although in the US, models ranged from sizes 4 to 12, while the average woman in the US wears a size 14.

What I’d like to see? I’d like to see us all embrace our inner loveliness, despite what society expects. As long as we’re active, happy, and healthy, our elegance should be emanate. Let us all be proud of our real beauty: makeup-less and natural.

My Hometown

By Emily

“When I see the lights of my hometown, I feel like the world stops spinning ’round. Everything makes sense, maybe it’s the innocence. I know it’s just a few miles down the road. I’m getting there as fast as I can go. I can always find peace of mind … in the lights of my hometown.” – Aaron Lines

One Life

By Emily

Alison, I thank God every day that you came into my life. Your smile, spirit, creativity and energy are contagious. Let’s live out our dreams together.

“It’s a great big world and you’ll see. It could pass you by at light speed. You got one life, one life. Don’t stop live it up. If it’s the last night in these streets. You’d be a fool to take a seat. You got one life, one life. Don’t stop live it up.” - ”One Life,” Hedley

Baker Farmhouse

By Emily

Located on Reesor Road in Markham, On. stands an old and enchanting farmhouse. My Great Great Uncle Stanley Baker lived there until the early 1970′s, when the Canadian government expropriated the land for a new Pickering International Airport.

The 40-year-old airport debate continues to strike controversy; however, a recent study said the city might need an airport between 2027 and 2037. Former Liberal Ajax-Pickering MP Mark Holland has always been a strong opponent of the Pickering Airport, blasting the federal government. Current Conservative MP Chris Alexander has been quoted saying, “[I'm] personally 100 per cent against the airport, because the study showed there just is no demand for it.”

Today, the farmhouse remains on its last legs – windows smashed, wood rotting and grass overgrown. Although, it’s original charm, like the green fence and the white window frames can still be seen upon close examination.

This farmhouse will likely be torn down very soon. Before we bid the home adieu, my mom and I travelled there to take some photos and to reminisce about the old days.

Spring Air

By Emily

It reached an unusual high of 13 degrees Celsius today. Last year on this date, it peaked at – 1.7 degree Celsius. In light of the beautiful Spring-like weather, I took advantage of the sun and bicycled around Ajax. I hit a few trails, and tried to take some photos along the way.
